About Klimaatzaak
Who are we and how do we spend our money?
Klimaatzaak (Dutch for Climate Case) is a grassroots movement by citizens who want to force the Belgian authorities to fulfil their climate obligations through the courts. The aim of the lawsuit is to remind Belgium of its responsibility in the global fight against global warming.
Who is behind Klimaatzaak?
More than 71,000 concerned citizens
The non-profit organisation Klimaatzaak was founded in 2014. Since then, more than 71,000 concerned Belgians have joined the lawsuit as co-plaintiffs or supporters. They are the core of Klimaatzaak and support the cause through thick and thin. The climate is grateful to them. And so are we.
A skilled legal team
Our legal team is led by masters Carole Billiet and Audrey Baeyens from Baeyens & Billiet, alongside master Roger Cox, who won the pioneering Dutch Climate Case of Urgenda as well as the case against the carbon major Shell. Together, they represent Klimaatzaak and all co-plaintiffs. For the cassation proceedings, masters Paul Wouters and Jacqueline Oosterbosch take the lead.
Een raad van bestuur
The board of directors consists of 7 members. They set out the strategic guidelines for Klimaatzaak and work on a voluntary basis.
11 founders, 21 ambassadors and more than 40 volunteers
Founded in 2014 by 11 concerned citizens, Klimaatzaak was born out of the determination to challenge Belgium's inadequate climate policies. Today, the initiative is supported by 21 ambassadors and more than 40 committed volunteers, all working together toward a common goal.
How do we spend our money?
We receive no financial support from the government and are entirely dependent on donations to finance the legal proceedings. The money raised is used to cover legal costs, the operating costs of the non-profit organisation, and the costs of communication and fundraising. It is impossible to predict how long the legal proceedings will take and exactly how much they will cost. Any money remaining after the legal proceedings will be transferred to Belgian organisations and projects working in the field of ecology and transition.
